Genesis 2

Day 2

Genesis 2:2-3 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

It amazes me that the creator of the universe not only took the time out of His schedule to rest, but that He planned it out.  The word clearly states that we are made in His image.  Shouldn’t we too make time to rest?  Easier said than done for most people, right!

Wait!  Maybe it is easier than we thought…  It says in verse 3 that He made the seventh day holy, sacred if you will.

What’s sacred to you?  It may be down time with your family, a day at the lake enjoying God’s beautiful creation, or you may just want to read or spent time in prayer…  Whatever it maybe, all too often we fill that time with something else…  It’s so easy to over commit ourselves because we don’t make rest a priority.
Some people make a big deal that everyone’s day of rest should be Sunday…  I’m glad my pastors don’t take Sunday off!  Jesus even made some Pharisees feel pretty embarrassed when they tried to accuse Him and His Disciples of not honoring the Sabbath Day…

Mark 2:23-28 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grain fields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?" 25 He answered, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions." 27 Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

Jesus said come to me and I will give you rest...  Jesus is the Sabbath personified!

Colossians 2:16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.

The point I’m making is that we need a day of rest that we make sacred; to not be busy with the things of work…  It does not matter which day you choose…  My pastor’s day of rest (or Sabbath) is on Friday.  Fridays are sacred to him they are his family days.  You won’t find him anywhere near the office on those days…  What’s your day of rest?  How are you going to make sure it stays sacred!
